Issues:

1) Monument location should be studied further at #5 site so when approaching from East Blvd, you experience facing the monument, not seeing the side of it. Paths leading to the monument are contrary to the flow of the VA Hospital plaza and the greenspace where the proposed monument is situated.

2) Study benches to create a non-monolithic appearance. The current appearance is heavy, bulky and feels like it is competing with the monument.

3) Maximize ability to view monument with orientation onto the site - instead of it being placed in the middle of the star, move it closer to the edge of the circle.

The Committee, by a 5-2 vote, disapproved this. Although the designer met the concerns raised about the site and the way the monument interfaced with the potential audience, they did not address the monument itself. Committee members stated that the monument appears like something in a cemetary.  The memorial foundation admits that the monuments are generic to their program.

Greater consideration should be given to the fact that this installation precedent setting as this is the only proposed site that is directly adjacent to a VA hospital.

Consideration should also be given to the uniqueness of this being proposed for placement in  Cleveland's iconic cultural center. The monument should reflect the space it is in.
